SaltburnSaltburn-by-the-Sea, England, United Kingdom

Originally a Victorian seaside resort town, Saltburn has retained much of its past - from the splendid architecture of the former Zetland Hotel to the splendid old railway station. But its history really comes alive visiting Saltburn Smugglers Heritage Centre, charting the town's notorious hey-days of illegal trade and smuggling during the18th century with the mastermind John Andrew behind it all! This 19th century spa town retains many of its Victorian features such as its pier, the oldest water-powered cliff tramway in Britain, miniature railway on the seafront and the superb Valley Gardens. A trip on the cliff tramway is a must for any visitor, with its breathtaking views of the cliffs, the sea, the pier and sand-swept beaches. The front is also a haven for surfers and skate boarders whether it's sunny or not! Saltburn is the beginning of the coastal section of the Cleveland Way, taking walkers along the cliff tops of Staithes, Whitby, Scarborough and finishing in Filey.
